He stayed on till occupation duty in Japan. I had always assumed that he would be a believer in the MacArthur especially as he had signed photographs of MacArthur and other generals on his wall of respect. He was nearly the last of his West point class to "fade away" and I asked him about his experiences and to my surprise he had extensive reservations about MacArthur. He went to Australia feeling positive. One of his best friends was one of the so called Bataan gang. My grandfather and his classmates graduated early from West Point for WW1, but felt poorly prepared so when my grandfather returned as an instructor he supported MacArthur's attempts to reform the curriculum. In Australia and New Guinea. He interviewed Americans and Australians. General Eichelberger was languishing in frustration desperate to serve elsewhere. Most of the Australians were beginning to see through MacArthur and resenting it. As has been pointed out elsewhere MacArthur disparaged Australian war fighting skills and experience. The island hopping strategy was forced upon him. In fact my grandfather's assessment which he shared with the great man was that by 1943 the Japanese had lost the capacity to take the initiative in the SWPA and that could be left to wither on the vine including the Philipines. They were very brave, excellent at camouflage but were operationally at a dead end. My grandfather then asked to switch to the ETO. MacArthur refused firstly few generals wanted to serve under him for obvious reasons, secondly MacArthur zealously controlled the information going to Washington and knew that my grandfather was close to McNair head of Army Ground ForcesAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02903152448016807095noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1977310098529084891.post-64907652047723125342019-08-13T17:13:43.634-07:002019-08-13T17:13:43.634-07:00A "just folks" ginral to folks back home...A "just folks" ginral to folks back home. Nothing cheapens a solemn medal, given for bravery (usually fatal) in the face of extreme circumstances, one for extreme bravery, than to casually award it it to some pompous ass because “he thinks he deserves it”. Giving out medals that really mean something to “generals” “just because they were there”, is extremely disgusting. A distinguished flying cross for being a passenger on a sightseeing excursion? Please. And worse is the alleged “man” that would even accept such a thing. MacArthur apologists are just that. I had just gone through a rough divorce, wasn't making enough money to sustain me and my children, and my 17 year old son had just gone to jail for the first time. When I talked to him, I immediately found a sense of peace. He was very honest with me and I could feel that. He also told me that everything would be okay. After my work began, things began to change. My bills were all caught up, the relationship I was in became much stronger, I was never FLAT broke, and my son was released from jail earlier than we expected!! I also completely got over the failed marriage and began to move on. And, received a better position at my job which will cause an $800 per month increase!! I felt completely comfortable with the work that was being done because I was always encouraged by Dr. Todd. manifestspellcast@gmail.com is the BEST!!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1977310098529084891.post-7041769062614223652018-01-09T09:46:15.235-08:002018-01-09T09:46:15.235-08:00After being in relationship with him for seven yea...After being in relationship with him for seven years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should rather contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that never believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I mailed the spell caster, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before three days, that my ex will return to me before three days, he cast the spell and surprisingly in the second day, it was around 4pm. My ex called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem and who is different from all the fake ones out there. During the period before the Pearl Harbour attack he sold all his considerable share portfolios in Philippine gold mines manufacturing. He demanded and received a $500,000 final payment in gold from Quezon before he fled to Australia. His final payment for service as Field Marshall of the Philippines Army which had crumbled in two days in direct fighting against the Japanese. The deserter payment was kept secret and only revealed 25 years later. And yes the slogan "I shall return" was written by a Filipino subordinate for him. The original was "We shall return". MacArthur changed it to "I shall return". Boesen writes that a "MacArthur Shutout" consisted of harassing journalists until he leaves and then "ensure that he doesn't get back." I don't believe this constitutes as a good general. Censoring the press and wasting money needed to rebuild japan, outlined in Boesen's "Goldfish for the General", both are poor characteristics of a good general. They served in Japan, never intentionally meeting him, until they got shipped stateside. When Korea kicked off it was all hands on deck, get the job done, no time for whining until things settled in enough for them to finally get word to the Joint Chiefs via personal correspondence that things were a mess. Truman and the JCS never once got an official report from Big Mac until he showed up in that picture over looking the Yalu River. Truman was already going to fire him but the Chinese invaded. Truman was rightfully terrified of the self proclaimed "American Caesar". Big Mac paralleled Caesar right up to the Rubicon. Roosevelt shipped him off to the Phillipines because he was very very concerned by MacArthur using federal troops against american citizens without a thought. An American Military coup was very likely as long a Mac had any kind of command. IF they retired him then he would have stayed in Washington and made a political mess in the Depression era working class cities. At least as an American General he could be brought to heel when absolutely necessary. OCS classes are now given the lesson that everyone answers to the elected civilian chain of command. There is no Rubicon river in the USA. It's also far to say that he probably just wasn't nearly at his best during those first few months, he had one must recall come out of retirement mere months before, and then been flung into grinding, doomed campaign he was expected to loose. This likely did nothing good for his mental state.

He definitely started to improve notably after moving to Australia, particularly after having some time to come to grips with the problem before him in pushing north. By 1943 the theater was running well and knocking off strong point after strong point. I don't know that I would ever call him a genius or anything, but once he'd had some time to get his feet back from under him and was given battles he actually had some realistic chance of winning he performed satisfactorily overall.

Could others have been found who could have done it? Sure, probably, but others could have been found to do 95% of what any given general did in any given battle really.

So while his genius might be overblown by some I think there are just as many that are entirely too eager to try and negate all his strengths and accomplishments and try to portray him as some sort of stupid buffoon. The fact of the matter is that there are guys even during that war that were given way more to work with and did way fucking worse.
Tk3997https://www.blogger.com/profile/07431981452630528057noreply@blogger.com
